The principal of Modern Management theory that can as applied to
Healthcare settings in my opinion are the Institutional theory. In this theory as defined
By Scott as “institutions consist of cognitive, normative, and regulative structures and activities
That provide stability and meaning to social behavior …”30, p.34. Scott has further broken down this
definition into three pillars of institutions: the regulatory, the normative and the cognitive pillar.
The regulator pillar is a set of rules, sanctions, and laws set up for organizations to be regulated.
In a healthcare facility there are also rules, laws and sanctions set up by agencies to regulate and
to make sure the facility is being run in a way to provide safe, quality care. One example of this is
how HIPPA regulates healthcare organizations. In the normaltive pillar pressure is applied by society
of what is expected and viewed as being appropriate and what is not. The healthcare organization is
also pressured by society to make sure the quality, professional and safety measures are held to a
standard that is within the norm. The cognitive pillar infers that organizations should look and act
similar by “…rules that constitute the nature of reality and the frame through which meaning is
made.”30,p 40. If we look at different healthcare facilities we will fine that they are all very similar.
Reason being that they are all run and regulated by the same agencies making them safe for the
patients they provide care too. These patients expect to be treated with the same quality and
professional care. In summary making the institutional theory the best choice for the healthcare
setting.
