The Gospel of John

The Book of John was, obviously, written by John. John also wrote first through third John and Revelation. These books were written around 90 A.D. John died of old age, the only disciple not martyred. John is similar to the other Gospels in that they all are a historical account which follows Jesus’ timeline from Baptism to the Resurrection. John stands out from the other Gospels because John has more eye-witness testimony and proof that Jesus was indeed the promised Messiah. The Book of John shows clearly the relationship between Jesus and The Father, especially in John 8:58 when Jesus says, “before Abraham was born, I am!” Referring to himself with the same name God the Father went by in the Old Testament. The Gospel of John is not meant to replace the Gospel but merely as an educational aid to further our understanding of Jesus’ life.

The movie The Gospel of John is very true to the text of the Gospel. In fact, before the movie even starts, you are prepared for what you are about to witness with the line stating that the movie “is a faithful representation of Gospel.” The narration and dialogue are almost word for word from the bible, the differences probably resulting from a different translation of the text. I think this really gives the movie credibility. You automatically know that everything you see and hear is directly from the Bible. You don’t have to worry that anyone might be taking liberties with the film and making it into their interpretation of John. This curbs any criticism that might otherwise form in the minds of movie patrons and instead reassures them that they are about to witness a doctrinally sound representation of the Gospel.

The movie is faithful to the life of Jesus, but it could have been done better. He is portrayed as a strong loyal person, and I think the actor did a decent job of making Jesus identifiable to us. While the acting...
