To what extent do you agree with the following statements that appear in the readings?

“IT management is about management.” What do you think Barton is trying to get at with this statement?

Barton view of IT management is that like any other business function such as finance, human resources; marketing etc-IT management is about creating value for the customer and to meet business objectives via effective and efficient management of resources (people, technology etc) and achieve maximum return on assets. It is about management of resources including technology to improve the overall value chain of the organization. IT management is about establishing processes, execution of business strategy via these processes and continuous improvement of processes which can enable the business meet its objectives. IT management is not about implementation of the latest technology or software in a company. IT management is about implementation and support of the right technology which can meet business needs, help generate profits and reduce risk for the stakeholders thereby creating value for the shareholders.

I also echo Barton’s view of IT management. The word IT-Information Technology management in a business arena can mislead a person to believe that it is about utilization of cool technology to manage and communicate information both internally and externally. In reality IT management is more than just information management and technology. As eluded by Barton in his statement- IT management is the collaborative ,synergistic and creative discipline between business/firm and technology whereby all of the technology resources of a firm are managed in alignment with its needs, priorities and strategies to create value for the customer (internal and external).
