Anorexia nervosa is described as an eating disorder that that is characterized by fear of being overweight and starving willingly leading to the distortion of body image. Anorexia nervosa is known to have an impact in the lives of young girls from the age of fourteen up to the age of eighteen. This complication does not occur at any specific point in life and sometimes may lead to complicated health issues that might finally lead the victim to death. The condition has therefore become a major health issue in the American community that needs to be addressed with an immediate effect. This paper addresses anorexia nervosa as a major health complication, citing its implications and what can be done in mitigating the condition.

As an eating disorder, anorexia nervosa is a condition that arises from a poor relationship between an individual and the diet. The eating disorder is common among young women in America, who would not want to become overweight since the modern culture mostly recognizes slim and slender young women. The eating disorders usually begin an individual recognizes that he/she is gaining weight and is afraid of becoming overweight. The individual will then start restricting his diet. The continued process of restricting in diet leads to a negative feeling towards food and the individual ends up taking very little just to maintain body shape. With continued self induced starvation, the individual develops certain psychological problems along poor diet leading to the development of serious health complications. At a certain stage, the individual loses self esteem and the ability to admit his/her condition leading to diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. Any individual who has been diagnosed with the complication should start on medication as soon as possible in curbing the detrimental effects that are caused by the condition (Stanley, 1999).
