Cultural Differences between India and Canada

India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Whereas, Canada is relatively new as it was created when the North American continent was discovered. Even after decades of globalization, cultural differences still exist between India and Canada. India and Canada mainly varies in gender roles, family structure and dietary practices.

First of all, there are differences in gender roles between India and Canada. There are lots of differences in the status of men and women in both the countries. Due to the traditional values and male dominance in India, men are the bread winners. They really work hard to fulfill their families’ basic needs and for that reason they do not participate in the household work. While, women are treated as the second class citizens in India and in their early age, they have to follow their father’s wishes and after marriage their husband’s wishes. However, in Canada both spouses have to work, as it is really difficult for one person to run the house. Both have to work on the household work. Women are given full rights and there is no difference between male and female.

Secondly, family structure differs between the two countries. In India, there are mainly extended families. The oldest person of the house control the house and everyone have to follow them. Women get help from the other ladies of the house in the household work. It is the part of the tradition and everyone has to follow these rules.
