ROWE Program at Best Buy

Describe the culture of Best Buy.

Creating a constructive and friendly organizational culture is very important for the development of any organization. It is unlikely for an organization to achieve the mission and objective effectively in the long run if the culture is balance properly (Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson, 2009). In order to meet the demands of its value customers best buy has make every effort to provide its customers with the best product and price in a timely manner. However, this has created a stressful environment for best buy employees. Employees were not acknowledge for their hard work, instead for the long hours they spend at work. Some employees worked twenty-four hours a day leaving them no time to spend with their family. According to the case, one employee was actually given a plague for turning the office lights on in the mornings and turning them off late at nights. Another employee work three consecutive days preparing a report that was suddenly due.

The company’s culture have a history of embracing long hours and sacrifice. Culture plays a huge part in deciding the quality of organizational life. It is “ rooted in the countless details of an organization’s life and influences much of what happens to employees within an organization” (Hellriegel, and Slocum, 2011) . Before Best buy implemented the Results-Only Work Environment Program or ROWE the company culture failed to value work-life balance of its employee, employees felt that they were compelled to work long hours because they had to solve the problem before they leave work in spite of the amount of hours it took. In addition, the burnout and turnover were very high, and employees morale were low.

Best Buy created the ROWE program and it brought about an immense change in Best Buy culture. The program give employees control over how, when, and where they get the job done, as long as they accomplish the desired goal. The program...
