A Rose for Emily

Miss Emily lived a very eccentric life compared to most of us nowadays. She was a shut-in and she detached herself from society. She clothed herself in black attire and was in a constant state of grief. As time progressed Emily would be forced to come to terms with the reality of her circumstances. Emily’s isolation was a result of her dads overbearing nature, lack of confidence, and resistance to accept death.

Emily’s timidity to the world began with her father’s influence over her. Her dad did not feel that any of the males in town were suitable. He would chase away potential suitors and thought “none of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such.” There are several factors that contributed to her withdrawal from the public eye. She remained isolated from everyone besides Tobe, which is what her father had intended all along. Emily’s only property was the house her father bequeathed to her upon his eternal rest. She resided there for many years as the house was dilapidated and fell into disrepair. The townspeople did not verbalize that she was crazy, but it was a general consensus shared amongst most. After her father’s passing her mental health declined in the absence of her guardian which led to depression. In brief, it could be said that Emily’s seclusion was sustained due to her dad’s overbearing nature since he did not think that the local gentlemen callers were worthy of her, the only property left to her was a place to live when he died, and he abandoned her in a way that lead to her long term illness.

It appears that Emily’s self-esteem diminished during this story, which definitely contributes to her hiding away. As Emily aged her looks faded and without much money she could not afford to buy expensive clothes or tend to her looks.
