In this passage, especially the first one, culture Indian and nature Indian are revealed lively. Here are some specific details that I quote directly from our story.
The court of Powhatan:
- Here more than two hundred of those grim courtiers (a person who is part of the court of a king or queen that are unpleasant and depressing) stood wondering at him, as he had been a monster.
- His train had put themselves in their greatest braveries.
- Before a fire upon a seat like a bedstead, he sat covered with a great robe made of skin, and all the tail hanging by.
- On either hand did sit a young wench of 16 or 18 years.
- Two rows of men, behind them as many women, all their heads and shoulder painted red, their heads bedecked (to be decorated something or someone) with white down of birds… a great chain of white beads about their necks.
The second passage:
- At his entrance before the King, all the people gave a great shout
- The Queen of Appamatuck was appointed to bring him water to wash his hands, and another brought him a bunch of feathers, instead of a towel, to dry them.
- Having feasted him after their best barbarous (extremely cruel and shocking) manner they could, a long consultation was held; but the conclusion was, two great stone were brought before Powhatan.
- Laid hands on him, dragged him to them, laid his head, being ready with their clubs (a heavy stick with one end thicker than the other, that is used as a weapon), to beat out (to hit someone or something many times, usually very hard) his brains.
The third passage:
- The most fearful manner, brought forth to great house in the woods, and there upon a mat by the fire to be left alone.
- The doleful (very sad) noise was made.
- Powhatan like a devil than a man.
