Personal Responsibility Essay

We must accept that one can't control all circumstances but at the same time the more responsibility you take the more in control you are because only you can think your thoughts and the very act of accepting responsibility clarifies your vision. I truly believe life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you handle it. This actually puts thing into perspective for me.

Who is responsible for our actions? We are all responsible for our own actions and behaviors. We all have the ability and option to choose how we handle situations. We can spend time blaming others but one should ask themselves how that is productive and what does it accomplish. It is up to us personally to hold ourselves accountable for the situations we may find ourselves in. When we stop blaming others one may finally feel freed and more in control of oneself.

Personal responsibility is a key factor to college success. It is only you who can achieve your education. As I start the journey of continuing my education after 20 some years, I must appreciate that the variables such as how I spend my time and my attitude are up to me. It is also important to have the desire to succeed which will certainly help with self-motivation. No one else can do this for me. Any negative thoughts will only make it more difficult to succeed. A positive attitude is extremely important and will assist in the best possible outcome.

Broektt and Hiemstra (1991) stress personal responsibility as the connection or central concept for understanding self-direction as it is represented and described in their model. They also state that “by personal responsibility we mean that individuals should have ownership and thought to their personal actions.

I plan to practice personal responsibility in education through the power of habit and the power of now. In other words, don’t put off until tomorrow what I can accomplish...
