1 Introduction
Higher learning institutions need to produce good passing results in order for them to maintain their funding from Government, it is therefore imperative that they select candidate in their institution who will do well. Unfortunately this system seems to be unfair to candidates who come from disadvantaged socio-economic and low quality education environment. South Africa comes from a past were there was extreme unfairness and inequality from education to lively hood in general, this has created a ripple effect of uneducated parents raising children who are taught at schools by unmotivated teachers. A lot of children in South Africa are subjected to this dilemma and unfortunately when competing in the job market or Tertiary entrance they fail to do well.
A fair and unbiased testing measures needs to be put in practice so that equality and fairness is experience by each candidate applying at the University. If this is not done then the consequences would be of a continuous ripple effect of uneducated individual being trapped in poverty.
Fair testing will be a challenge in South Africa until we take into account and not overlook the differences that exist in our multicultural society from language to child rearing and accessible educational opportunity to individual. A number of contributing factors need to be considered when assessing subjects in order to be fair and objective.
