I have chosen to write about the essay “ Facing Poverty with a Rich Girls Habits”, by Suki Kim. Her essay is about a young girl who was very wealthy and overnight lost everything. She is the young girl. She describes all of the extreme differencesand many obsticles of every kind she must endure and overcome. Her life has changed from day to night. All of this has happen so that her father did not have to serve jail time for going bankrupt as the law requires in South Korea.

She lived in mansion in South Korea. She said “Gone in an instant was my small world, made possible by my fathers shipping company, mining business, and hotels.” Now that they are broke and have fled to America they are living in what she calls “a crammed, ugly place”. The koren family she lived with had 2 sons, Andy and Billy whom she tries to play with however it is very difficult to overcome the language barrier as they speak English.

She quickly began to realize all that you must endure and rely upon yourself to do when you are poor. She had to ride the bus to school no driver anymore, also no governess to help with her homework or maid to clean up after her. She was very embarrassed just to take her clothes to what she called the “Laundromat”. Also not having to bow to the Teachers or wear “ slippers to keep the floor clean “ was very strange to her as this is how she had been taught.

Her English as a Second Language Class she had expected to enjoy. She thought it would be great to be able to speak to other people like her in her language....
