Zellers, HBC’s mass mechanising retail chain in Canada is one of the largest retailers in the country, but was struggling with an ongoing challenge, where the staff had a difficult time knowing when to restock merchandise and knowing what was inventory. There would have been numerous out-of-stocks on popular items and arduous inventory management.

The previous process for inventory control

Inventory management was done using paper, pen and a spreadsheet. Throughout the day, sales associates would walk around the sales floor, examine the contents, write down what merchandise needed to be refilled and then go to the stock room to find the merchandise and replenish the shelves. Any changes, which included new stock arrivals at the store, would be entered into a spreadsheet manually.
