Minority and Entrepreneurship

Introduction

Business ownership in the U.S. economy has long been established as (1) a mainstay of economic growth and job creation; (2) a proving ground for product and service innovations; and (3) a means of identifying and exploiting previously underdeveloped markets. Business ownership including self-employment has often represented an important and viable alternative for those who, for whatever reason, are unable to identify a suitable position within the traditional job market. Business ownership allows individuals and their families to garner monetary returns relative to talent, initiative, and risk-taking; more significantly, it facilitates economic security and upward mobility. Business ownership represents an important independent means to simultaneously earn a livelihood and achieve self-actualization (Puryear et al, 2008)

Context of the Problem

In today’s society minority business ownership is steady increasing. Unemployment rates keep increasing in today’s society and the self-employed workforce has been increasing in size. This study is to analyze how minorities are progress in society when it comes to business ownership. The study only focuses on minority but women minority and how they are steady increasing in the entrepreneurship. This chapter along is to provide a context of the research by discussing gender leadership role, minority roles, and reviewed literature.

Statement of the Problem

How have minorities change when it comes to entrepreneurship? In today’s society minorities are gaining a steady increase when it comes to starting and maintaining a business. Given the growth in minority entrepreneurship and its increasing impact on the business community, it is important to understand the backgrounds, management skills, and type of businesses and business problems of minority entrepreneurs (Hisrich, 1991).
