Abortion Is a Women’s Right

According to Merriam Webster abortion is the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first 12 weeks of gestation. Abortion is an extremely controversial subject that many people support or oppose. Those that support abortion believe that abortion is a women’s choice because ultimately it is her body. While those that oppose abortion of an unborn child believe the child is still a living person and terminating a pregnancy is murder.

In February 2012, two of the strictest anti-abortion “personhood” bills in the country were passed in Virginia. The first bill states that personhood would begin at conception and would provide unborn children at every stage of development an option to enjoy all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to other persons, citizens, and residents. The second bill would require women to undergo an ultrasound procedure prior to having an abortion (CBS News, 2012). Although this bill does not ban abortions due to the legalities that are protected under the 1973 United States Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade it would, however make certain types of contraceptive measures illegal.

Abortion should be freedom of choice. It should not be determined by a law, a state or country. An abortion during the first 12 weeks of gestation can be described as an egg that has been fertilized but has not developed into an embryo. Women chose to have abortions for different reasons. These reasons range from physical health risks, rape, incest, the possibility of a child being born with a severe disability, they are too young, or they are not capable of financially taking care of them.
