Controversial Television Advertising

Controversial Television Advertising is geared to attract the younger and more influential crowds in today’s societies. These advertising companies should be thinking about the content they approve to put on television. They should be considering all age groups, not just their targeted age group. More television commercials seem to be showing an abundance of unnecessary skin. Some commercials are revealing too much to a very young audience that has no idea what to think about sex appeal. In an article by Jeong and Hwang called Persuasive Effect of Nudity in Print Advertising it states, “Results show significant main effects of viewer gender such that when viewing advertisements that feature female nudity, male viewers react more favorably compared to females, whereas, when viewing male nudity, females react more favorably to the ad.” (Jeong,2005) Most commercials that show nudity are showing the female body because that is what men like to see. Should we be paying more attention to the ad itself and not just the female nudity? According to the article I mentioned, females are the ones who are paying attention to advertising whether or not there is nudity present. (Jeong,2005) Some commercials start out hot and steamy and end up having a different objective, but some, on the other hand like that Paris Hilton commercial where she is washing an expensive car in a two piece bikini are just unnecessary for our younger audiences. Although Carl’s Jr. inc. probably had a jump in sales while that commercial was airing. But for some, the effects are not so good. Sex still sells, but that same sizzle has the potential to burn advertisers who are deemed to be pushing it too far.
