Trucking In the Current Economy

Trucking in the current economy is at its all-time low. Along with the rest of the businesses being affected by the current economy, so has the trucking industry. One thing about the trucking industry is that no matter how bad the economy is there will always be a job available for truck drivers. Consumers will always spend money, it may not be a lot of money but they will spend (Lifeasatrucker). This means that building materials need to be transported from the mills to the stores, fuel must be delivered, and food must get to the store (Lifeasatrucker). As a truck driver we might lose some miles in this economy and our paychecks will be lower, but we will still have a job.

People might ask how a trucking company will survive in this economy. Even though truck tonnage has fallen 1.1% in April after the rise of 0.6% in March (Truckinginfo, 2012), consumers are still going to be driving their cars, buying food for their homes, and buying some building material to build new fences and homes. All of these things need to be hauled, in turn requires trucks and truck drivers. You must remember that trucks and truck drivers are not optional in the world today they are a necessity (Lifeasatrucker).

Regardless of the economy and the loss of freight over the past few months, companies will survive through this sick spell. As long as the company is in the correct position or have the correct contracts and the right drivers in their trucks then they will survive the sick spell also. The company that I work for just gave me a raise today, even in this economy. My boss knows when you have a good driver; you want to keep them around. If he can not get the miles then he will compensate by giving us a pay raise. The boss also incorporated a bonus incentive plan. We will get a slight pay increase for saving money on fuel cost, maintenance cost, and getting good inspections from the federal DOT.
