The purpose of community policing is to become more familiar with the Police in your area, and be able to communicate on a more personal level. The goal is for officers to become more attentive, responsive and personable to meet the needs of the community. Many have a presence such as in a mall or a strip mall letting the community interact with the police, also known as storefront police stations.

To achive this requires officers to be open minded, unbiased, and sensitive to the concerns and problems of others. Even if officers do not agree with a complainant's viewpoint, they should try to listen and understand the problem. Police should display empathy and compassion with sincerity, not in a rehearsed way. Police must also develop skill in planning, problem solving, organization, interpersonal communications, and perhaps most importantly critical thinking. Many have a presence such as in a mall or a strip mall letting the community interact with the police, also known as storefront police stations.

To be successful community policing organize community programs to reduce crimes in their neighborhoods, such as community watch blocks. It should also be mentioned that community policing is a results-oriented system. Community police officers must have face time with residents daily until the problem or issues has been resolved.

You can tell a successful community policing organization by looking at the members of that community. Citizens who feel safer in there neighborhoods will start to give back to the neighborhood. They have more pride in their neighborhood and strive to keep crime low and those who commit crimes out of their neighborhoods. They spend more times outdoors and bonding as a community.
