INTRODUCTION

The main purpose of this assignment is to gain the practical implications of the discipline through application of the theoretical knowledge and principles gained during the academic period. The assignment will focus on revealing the changes in discourse of the global leader in fast food chain, McDonalds, in response to the criticisms and negativity regarding its business practice, as a result of experiment conducted by an independent filmmaker, Morgan Spurlock. He followed a diet plan to eat nothing but 3 squares meal from McDonalds. His research led to the conclusion that fast food severely deteriorates health and is a major cause of obesity, which, in turn, seriously affected the sales and stock market of the company. They had to face several criticisms. Their promotion schemes targeting the children faced strong objections from parents. They are the biggest user of beef in the world causing slaughter of millions cows qualifying them to be on the constant watch of animal welfare groups. They are also accused of following trends of closed window poultry farming and pitiful rearing and illegal breeding of chicken farms. Does the fast food have any nutritional values? Has always been the question of debate. They are even accused of suppressing the oppositions by exerting pressures through media and legal powers. The company decided to fight back and to remove the allegations of seller of unhygienic junk food came up with introduction of hygienic salads in its menu and started a novel concept of McCafe.
