Online universities experienced a period of unprecedented growth over the past decade. For students, the virtual classroom extends educational opportunities beyond traditional learning environments into the hands of any learner with internet and the will to persevere academic requirements. For instructors, the virtual classroom facilitates provision of academic feedback, assessments and inter-classroom communication regardless of geographic location.

Online learning has advantages and disadvantages for adult learners working towards a college degree. The purpose of this discussion is to inform readers of the principle advantages and disadvantages of online learning from a writer’s perspective.

The first advantage of online learning is that you are able to work at your own pace and aren’t overwhelmed with academic requirements. Another advantage of online learning is that you create your own academic schedule in parallel with personal and professional obligations. The final advantage is unrestricted access to academic material enabled by web-based classroom instead of restrictive traditional classroom environment.

Whereas online learning has advantages, the same is true in reverse. The first disadvantage of online learning is that you are your own teacher and sometimes find learning harder if you don’t completely understand an assignment or course material. Another disadvantage for online learners who are military students is while on deployment sometimes internet access is sporadic. The last disadvantage to online learning is cost. Additional educational expenses incur include internet provider, tuition, and computer hardware and software. Finally individual computer literacy can be a disadvantage for some online learners.
