Race and my Community
In this autobiographical essay I will discuss racial issues in my community of Charlotte, North Carolina. I will talk about the statics in my community, what I have witnessed, articles I have read about racial issues, whether or not other look like myself in my community and how we are treated.
Charlotte Statistics
I am 24 years old white woman living in Charlotte, North Carolina. I moved to Charlotte about 22 months ago. I moved here because my mom and I had job opportunities here and was looking for a change from Phoenix, Arizona. Since I have only lived in Charlotte just shy of two years, I have personally not witnessed a lot of racial issues. The gender statistics show that the population is 51% female (Onboard Informatics, 2011). According to Onboard Informatics (2011), 47.9% of the population is of white race. This honestly shocked me when I read this. I thought since I work with majority of black women and I see a lot of black people on a daily basis that there would be a higher percentage of black people in the community. However in 2010, only 57 percent of Charlotte voters are white and 35 percent are black voters (Curtis, 2010). In the community that I live in, the dominant race seems to be white as well. When I drive throughout the neighborhood, the majority of the people seem to have been white that walk their dogs, taking a jog or doing yard work. Although I have black neighbors on both sides of my home.

The first article I read on racial issues I read before starting this class. I had first heard about it on the local news station. The issue and situation intrigued me so much that I decided to try and fine an article on the internet about it to see if I could learn more to what was going on.
