Cheating

Ethics and cheating in any learning environment is still defined in the same way as always, regardless the advancement of technology. The definition of ethics according to the dictionary (Merriam-Webster’s, 2001) it states; “The discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation”. Ethics is everybody’s job to try and maintain there is no short cut, when a person chooses to cheat on a school test, it is morally wrong there is no other way of putting it regardless how the student cheated by looking on someone else’s paper, writing the answer on a cheat sheet or using technology such as an I-pod or cell phone camera it is still cheating.

I have already given the definition of ethics and the definition of cheating according to dictionary.com it states cheating is; “To act dishonestly; practice fraud. To violate rules deliberately.” In my opinion the definition of ethics and cheating by both student and teachers should be the same whether old or new school, however according to the article, High-tech high school cheaters (2001), some students made comment such as; ““The harder they make school, the harder kids will cheat,” wrote one high school student in Massachusetts. “Cheating is what makes America great,” said another. And, “If [former President] Clinton can do it and get away with it, why can’t we?” asked another.” The definition of ethics and cheating do differ between high school and college, in high school if a student gets caught cheating it might mean a failing grade for that day, however when a student gets caught cheating in college it can mean your messing up your future because as stated in this article Cheating; why it’s different in college, “You're going to get to know your major professors pretty well, and you're going to need them for things like recommendations for internships, scholarships, awards, jobs, and special programs.
