Ethical Issues and Management Paper

Termination is a sensitive subject not only to an employee. Letting go of an employee involves steps to determine why a manager decides to terminate an employee’s contract.

The moral and ethical issues a manager faces when terminating an employee, are to ensure that the worker is unwilling or unable to improve his, or her work performance. The next issue that would occur is documentation that disciplinary actions were taken and the employee was informed what will happen if nothing changes about his or her behavior. Every Manager should consider giving the employee a chance of improvement with the improvement plan step ( Susan M. Heathfield,). Working in a position as a manager it is very important to understand, what an employee can be fired for. A manager cannot terminate an employee for reasons such as discrimination of race, sex, age, orientation, or whistle blowing, since this is against the law. If an employee has disciplinary problems, the managers needs document every issue that they may have with an employee. Barry Gross (All business 2010) states; “that documentation is not a requirement for termination.” However, he advises that this should be done in case the manager sees no choice but to terminate that employee. Therefore, documentation can state that the particular employee has had prior discipline problems.

Those issues can affect other employees work ability and motivation. A manager must act in the best ability for the entire staff. It is the same in social settings, when we look at what is best for more people. If there is an employee who is always out ill, it puts pressure on the rest of the staff to make sure that the shift is covered, making for disgruntled workers. The resentment begins to build, and the team becomes less productive. Therefore, if an employee must be fired because of those issues, than it is the best decision for the coworkers and the company.
