America has always been known as being diverse, “the cultural melting pot,” as sometimes nicknamed. Being this melting pot has been one of our main strengths to which each culture has contributed. It is a shame that Americans are known as being diverse, yet when a person speaks of other cultures, they are hesitant to say certain things. To have a country where people can speak and express themselves freely, will help the people get along better in working or discussing differences. This is why Sam Houston State University should make all incoming freshmen take a course in diversity which would be very beneficial. They would be gaining an insight that would breakdown prejudice thoughts and stereotypes. Not understanding a person’s ideas or practices is what causes problems in our society today. Taking a diversity class will help people learn more about a person’s cultures and thoughts to make it easier for one to understand them.

The incoming freshmen that are required to take a class in diversity would bring new insight to the classroom. A student from a third world country may explain about how food is a scarce resource to an American student. Looking at the world from different point of view, will help the domestic students realize what they have and what they are taking for granted. It is harder to believe a paragraph in a book then it is to believe a person telling you about their country. Furthermore, a book may not contain information that a person knows; such as real life experiences. The range of views and backgrounds of people that students will learn about, forces them to think deeper in nearly every aspect. One student may campaign for animal rights while a student from a third world country may only think of animals as food. The student that was campaigning for animal rights may have never thought of an animal in that kind of way, because most American students do not see where their dinner comes from.
