Considerations of Globalization Paper
Organizations everywhere are realizing the benefits of structuring high-performance teams to replace individual routines and functions. The strength of a team relies heavily on the collective intelligence of the team to solve problems and increase performance. By utilizing the benefits of teams, companies have a better chance to save time, money, and effectively reach their goals and visions.
Becoming a High-Performance Team
The characteristics of a high-performance team include; having a shared mission or goal, has autonomy and authority, includes interdependent and shared leadership, has broadly defined jobs, shows meaningful participation in discussions, and shows increased performance (French, J. 2008). When creating a high performance team, management must first decide on what type of team is needed. There are three different types of teams; teams that recommend things, teams that run things, and teams that make or do things (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008, p. 193). Teams that recommend things decide on the best course of action when solving a given problem and recommend their decision to management as being the best possible option. The team usually has a target date to come to a decision and then disbands when the job is complete. Teams that run things are usually composed of a team leader and team members that have the responsibility to lead other teams or individuals to complete set goals. Teams that recommend things are functional groups and work units that perform ongoing tasks, such as marketing or manufacturing (Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn, 2008, p. 193). These groups usually work together for longer periods of time and have a working knowledge of the internal operations used to influence production.
