Not only have humans, like all other living creatures on the planet, had to make adaptations, changes and adjustments to survive and thrive, but we have had a profound impact on the lives of other creatures on Earth. Sometimes this has been a beneficial impact, and in some cases, it has been a disaster for the other creatures.

Do some background reading about the extinction of the passenger pigeon: http://www.si.edu/Encyclopedia_SI/nmnh/passpig.htm[->0], an event that is very easily attributed to the activities of humans. Passenger pigeons are not the only creatures that have been made extinct by the actions of people. There are dozens of other examples, as well as some creatures whose existence is in serious peril, such as the golden lion tamarin[->1] and the thamin[->2].

|What responsibilities do we, as humans, have to other species?Our biggest responsibility would be to stop creating huge ecological and biological gaps on the planet (like tearing down rainforests). I would say, for at least for a few hundred years, we have been raping the planet, all in the name of profit. We take without giving back, or even thinking about the ramifications of our actions. We need to learn to live in harmony and peace with the planet (we can’t pave the whole planet). We have great power, and with great power comes great responsibility. Our responsibilities are to preserve the planet for future generations, and to make sure there are places on earth that humans are not allowed to mine for resources (each country needs to set a large percent of untouchable land). We need to learn to live better quality lives, live with less and stop being so wasteful....
