Chapter 2 Mini Case 1: Deal-R-Us Brokers (Part 1)

MIS 589 Network Concepts and Application

Chapter 2 Homework

Mini Case I. Deals-R-Us Brokers (Part 1)

a. Classify the two alternatives in terms of what type of application architecture they use. The first alternative deals with client-based architecture. The second alternative deals with client-server architecture.

b. Outline the pros and cons of the two alternatives and make a recommendation to Fred about which is better. The pros of using the first alternative (client-based architecture) is that the price is affordable and doesn’t take long to develop. The cons of using the first alternative is that all data on the server must travel to the client for processing. This can overload the network circuits because far more data is transmitted from the server to the client than the client actually needs. The pros of using the second alternative (client-server architecture) is that it attempts to balance the processing between the client and the server by having both do some of the logic. Another pro is that client-server architecture enables software and hardware from different vendors to work together. The cons of using the second alternative include overcrowding in the network, a costly price, and maintenance necessities. I’d recommend that Fred use the second alternative (client-server architecture) since most organizations use the alternative and since it allows software and hardware from different vendors to work together. This alternative will probably have less problems than the first alternative. Even if problems do arise, they will probably not be problems that haven’t already been identified by other organizations so it shouldn’t take too long to figure out a solution.
