Accountability in the Marine Corp

The definition of accountability is, The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. The person having this obligation may or may not have actual possession of the property, documents, or funds. Accountability is concerned primarily with records, while responsibility is concerned primarily with custody, care, and safekeeping. In the Marine Corp this is important as we are the tip of the spear we go into areas most others would never dream about going, and as a unit we depend up on each other everyday to do our jobs and do them correctly so as not to get anyone hurt or killed. A leader takes charge and takes accountability for all those who fall under his or her leadership. Personnel accountability is critical in the event of a disaster or national emergency. Ensuring strict accountability for our fellow Marines is relatively easy because they are required to provide supervisors with contact information when they depart on leave even on there off time they are required to be accounted for. Accountability ranges for keeping track of personnel to keeping track of equipment. We are issued basic gear that allows us to be proficient at the task on hand. Without just one piece of that equipment we are not tactically prepared and that in itself can have devastating consequences. Whether that means someone else has to share whichever piece of equipment you maybe missing or your units time is wasted by either having to look for that piece of equipment or having to wait for the replacement to be delivered. In our line of work time is not something we have enough of. We are counted on to have the ability of anytime anywhere. Keeping accountability is what gives us that ability and is what makes us so good at our jobs. Relating this to the incident at Ft. Bragg, and artillery in general.
