Financial Analysis: Starbucks Corporation & Caribou Coffee Company Inc.
Summary of Company Backgrounds
Industry:
The industry that both of the companies I am researching are in is the Service - Specialty Eateries industry (specializing in premium coffee). This is an industry that has seen significant growth over the past decade as consumers have become more willing to pay a higher price for high quality coffee-based drinks. Premium coffeehouses have become a place to meet with friends or colleagues, a place to work on schoolwork or a place to surf the Internet using their Wi-Fi services.
Starbucks Corporation
Starbucks opened its first store in Seattle in 1971. As of July 2011, they have a total of 17,018 stores in over 50 countries. In addition to coffee and tea beverages, they offer coffee and tea brewing equipment, ready to drink products in retail stores and ice cream. Starbucks strives to be a responsible company by using ethical trading and responsible growing practices. They also work hard to find ways to help the environment such as using recyclable materials in their cups. (Starbucks, 2011)
Caribou Coffee Company Inc.
Caribou Coffee Company, Inc. was founded in 1992 and is the second largest premium coffee house company in the U.S. As of July 2011, they have locations in 20 states, the District of Colombia and nine international markets. In addition to coffeehouses, they offer their products in retail stores, office and foodservice providers, hotels and entertainment venues. They are committed to using operating practices that promote environmental protection and have been the recipient of the Rainforest Alliance Corporate Green Global Award. (Caribou Coffee, 2011).
