Adolescent Social and Personality Development

Abstract

One of the most influential stages for children is the stage of adolescence. Through this stage the child’s brain goes through many changes and they go through not only physical development but social and personality development also. The focus will be on social and personality development of children in their adolescence. In the adolescent stage children begin to establish themselves from their parents and find more comfort in being among friends, the child may value peer relations over family relations. A review of a study on how loneliness may affect the adolescent development in regard to peer relations, the adolescents view on commitment in regard to romantic, commit to parents and to friends will be done. Children in their adolescents are more susceptible to some at risk behaviors such as depression, suicide, substance abuse, delinquency, and sexual promiscuity. On article states that adolescent development can be considered an advanced development because it is fostered by challenges, encouragement and opportunity. The adolescent stage is one that is ridiculed with confusion as the child’s and it is important that during this process the child be given space and opportunity to make decisions that will help with their social and personality development.

The adolescent stage is one full of changes, the social and personality development is of great importance. If fostered and guided appropriately could help the teen grow into a functional part of society but if the teen is subjected to inappropriate things such as violence, and neglect or even given free will to fully make their own decisions during this tumultuous time this could lead the teen into at risk behaviors such as: smoking, substance use, promiscuity, depression and even suicide.
