III. Performance Objectives

Prerequisites: Successful completion of READ 009, ENGL 009, and MATH 009 or recentered SAT Verbal score of 370 or greater and SAT Math score of 330 or greater, or appropriate placement test scores. This course is one of the choices on the Liberal Education Core List.

This course (3 lecture hours) provides a general survey of the science of Psychology. It includes the study of research methods, biological foundations, learning processes, human development, personality, and abnormal psychology.

Successful completion of this course is dependent on these basic skills: Reading and reading comprehension, vocabulary building, organization of information and critical thinking.

General education graduation requirements met by General Psychology: General Psychology is part of the Liberal Education Core List for the Social Sciences. In most colleges and universities all over the U.S., General Psychology is a standard freshman level course in general education.

General education skills supported by this course: The most important general education skill supported by this course is reading and reading comprehension. It involves building vocabulary, organizing, conceptualizing, and generalizing information. A second general education skill supported by this course is critical thinking and problem solving.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

Introduction and Historical Perspectives

1. Identify and differentiate theoretical perspectives of psychology.

A. Recognize major assumptions of each theoretical perspective including: structuralism, functionalism, biological theories, behavioral theory, psychoanalytic theory, humanistic theory, and cognitive theory.

B. Recognize important names associated with the various perspectives and be able to match names with assumptions, methods, or perspectives.
