The resource-based view is a way of viewing the strategic resource available to a firm and in turn of approaching strategy. It emphasizes firm heterogeneity, eg. Each firm is a unique bundle of resource and capabilities. The fundamental principle of the RBV is that the basis for a competitive advantage of a firm lies primarily in the application of the bundle of unique valuable resources and skills at the firm’s disposal/ premise of the RBV is that possessing a particular combination of skills and resources, which provides a firm with the ability to perform a certain functions more effectively than its competitors.

Resource refers to a productive inputs or competitive assets that is owned or controlled by a company, which includes physical capital, human capital, organization capital, tangible & intangible, intellectual capital.

The resource based view focus on the need for fit between external market and its internal capabilities. It clarified that a company’s unique resource and capabilities is the basis for implementing a strategy. The strategy adoption should allow the company to exploit its core competencies relative to opportunities in the external environment.

The resource-base thought has clarified that firms are constrained in their ability to reap sustained competitive advantages from resources that can be acquired on a market. Therefore, the attention has been increasing focused on internal processes of asset accumulation as means to keep competitive advantage sustainable. The resource-based view strategies are often used in diversification. Diversification will enhance performance, therefore if it allows a business to obtain preferential access to skill, resources, assets or competences.
