Residents’ perceptions of tourists impact

A local resident is a critical element and role to influence the success or failure of the tourism industry. In tourism industry, the residents have a higher involvement to serve the tourists and engage with tourists, hence the residents’ perceptions and their behavior will affect the experience and satisfaction of tourists, thereby to influence the willingness of tourists revisit the destination. Some studies found residents perceived both positive and negative impact associated with tourists in Macau can divide by below factors, the positive impacts containing job creation, increased tax revenues for local governments, boosted and improved the infrastructure for local people, enriched social life, revitalisation of old town, restoration of historical sites, preservation of local cultures and conservation of natural resources. Meanwhile, they have perceived the negative impacts including traffic congestion, increased crime rate, increased cost of land and housing, increased price of goods and services, changes in traditional culture, deterioration of the urban environment, and tourists’ improper behavior decreased quality of life.

According to the Macau Daily News indicated that residents express the influx of the Individual visitors cause the crowding phenomenon of Gongbei port is becoming increasingly serious, the rent is increasing for a shop, inflation pressure add to local residents, the tension of catering industry and ratcheted up the pressure of traffic. Due to the attractions are extremely concentrated, when the number of tourists gather together in the same area for touring, some data reflected this case actually inflict the pressure of public resources to local residents and influence their living quality. For instance, the restaurants which located in the tourist zone constantly raise a price, but not out of business instead has a large patronage.
