Starting a business usually needs lots of deliberations and planning. Sketching a business plan to follow a certain business model, and figuring out where financing comes from are considerations that should come at the forefront. When seeking financing, investors and/or banks would most likely want to be intimate with your business plan before they supply the needed funding. Friends and families would likely be a good source for alternative financing.

Kathy Kudler did none of that. Her passion for gourmet food coupled with her frustration and difficulty of finding ingredients to cook a simple gourmet meal catapulted her to get into a business she couldn’t even imagine in her wildest dream. Suddenly, she finds herself owning La Jolla Store that stocks and sells wide variety of the freshest ingredients, fruits, and vegetables, and all the tools a gourmet cook could ever want and need. Inexperienced and unassuming, Kathy Kudler realized immediate and immense success, that an expansion to accommodate a burgeoning clientele is necessary. Two years after the first store opened, a second store opened in Del Mar, an adjoining city. Almost simultaneously, a third store had to be opened at Encinitas. Kathy is now scoping to open adjacent cities for another store location.

Kathy’s business inexperience has proven to be the number one reason for her success. However, as the rapid expansion due to the heightened and immediate success of her business, her inexperience would likely become her undoing if she continues to manage the business like a lemonade stand.
