Developing a job description takes time and requires a job analysis to assess the specifications of the job description. According to Cascio (2010), “The result of a job analysis is a job description (an overall written summary of task requirements) and a job specification (overall written summary of worker requirements)” (p. 167). Components of a job description can range from skills, education, experience, physical demands, job duties, and responsibilities along with any other factors that relate to a job. A job description can be utilized as a tool for interviewing candidates, job training, and in the evaluation of job performance. Even though job descriptions are not legally required, they serve as a valuable tool in making the functions of the job clear and minimize the likelihood of a legal challenge if a potential employee is denied employment (Cascio, 2010, p. 168-169). Job descriptions also help the organization minimize the loss of valuable information if there is a loss of employees. According to O’Regan (2012), Periodically updating this documentation or updating it when major change in circumstances occurs can help an organization avoid being caught off-guard when an employee departs with little advanced notice” (p. 21). This paper will take a detailed look on the job description of an agency insurance underwriter for The Travelers Companies, Inc. (TRV) along with suggested updated to make the description more current.

Job Summary

An agency underwriter is responsible for evaluating new and existing business to determine if the company should accept or continue on the risk.
