FORMAT

Here's how to format your Critical Review Essay. Be sure to introduce these elements into each section of the paper.

INTRODUCTION

• Define your subject

• The name 0 f the subj ect and the source or creator of the work

• Include a brief account of the main aspects of the subject that led to arguments you will be talking about throughout the body of your critical essay.

• State your position on the work with a thesis statement

BODY

• Provide background information on your subject before you begin evaluating

Ex: the animated film Persepolis was written by a Iranian woman 'who lived under the oppression of an Islamic State in the 1980s and 90s. Size witnessed death and destruction and defied Islamic law by expressing herself artistically, wearing prohibited clothing and seeking education in Europe.

• A summary of the subject and its main components

Ex: Bitches Brew is a collection of six improvised live takes that explore Miles Davis' departure from conventionaljazz that began in the late 1960s. The album has many long, hauntingfusion jams that include non-traditional instruments sucn as electric guitar, bass and piano, multiple percussionists and bass clarinet.

• Important details that help the reader envision the work.

Ex: the modern dance show made lise 0/ Kenyan landscapes and ceremonial group dances whose movements kept time with hand drumming and percussive chants.

• Important themes portrayed in the subject

Ex. The actors expose the difficulties had byfamilies affected by poverty and abuse. The central character, however, overcomes both depression and powerlessness by reaching out for emotional support and immersing himself in artistic expression.

• Important aspects of the subject that contributed to your thesis. If you are reviewing a movie, discuss what made you like (brilliant plot, actor chemistry, soundtrack, etc) or dislike (undeveloped characters, stereotypes, corny dialogue, nonsensical jumps...
