Confidential Instructions for Mr. Jones

You are the coach of one of the top football (soccer) teams in England. You have managed a winning team since 1986. You have led the team to multiple victories in the Champions league, Premier league, and various cups. You are well respected by the fans and owners. Having an era of success and dominance in England and Europe has given you the reputation as one of the most admired and respected coach in the history of the game.

In 2007, when your star striker was injured, you proposed a two-year loan agreement with another English team (South Hamp) for Ronald. The agreement was signed and Ronald started in August. In September, Ronald scored his first goal for a 2-0 victory over IBS Club (one of your biggest rivals). Ronald continued playing extremely well. In November, you announced you wanted Ronald to be a permanent player. However, during a match at South Hamp, Ronald was greeted warmly by the crowd and he crossed his arms over his chest symbolizing his love for South Hamp. This did not make you very happy. You started wondering where Ronald’s heart was. Ronald went on to score 33 times in 44 games. The 2007-2008 season passed and still you have not offered Ronald a contract.

In 2008, you had the opportunity to sign another young, talented striker. You signed Carlinho and left Ronald’s contact up in the air. The 30 million pound contract was for four years. After signing Carlinho, he quickly became your starter. This meant Ronald was benched. You knew this did not make him happy, but you believe in competition. You play the best player each game because you need to win. Ronald was emotional and had attitude problems which affected his playing. Ronald also wanted more money than he was worth. By buying Carlinho, you were showing Ronald that he was easily replaced.
