The Scientific Method

I would like to know if taking protein supplement along with a workout regimen will increase muscle growth. If so, I would also like to know if the amount of protein affects the amount of growth. Based on previous experiences, as well as basic concepts of nutritional sciences, my hypothesis is that both the consumption of protein and the amount consumed will affect the growth of the muscles.

To test this experiment, I would enlist 9 individuals with similar body structures and 3 personal trainers. I will leave the trainers in charge of training the individuals. To start off, I would have the trainers record the height, weight, body fat percentage, lean body mass, and body measurements as well as take full body pictures of each individual. I would then split the individuals with the personal trainers into three teams: the control team, team 1 and team 2. Each team consists of a personal trainer and three individuals. I would then give each trainer the same twelve week work out plan to ensure the trainers have the individuals training the same way.

To ensure the teams don’t influence each other in anyway and alter the data, I would have them train at different gyms. The control team will train the full twelve weeks without any supplementation. Test team 1 will receive 2 servings of protein supplement 1, containing 15g of protein, 3 times a day. Test team 2 will receive 2 servings of protein supplement 2, containing 30g of protein, 3 times a day. After each week, I would have the trainers check in with me to confirm the workout plans have maintained consistent among the three teams.

At the conclusion of the 12 weeks, I will have the trainers collect the same data that was collected at the begging of the experiment. If the individual’s weight, lean body mass and body measurements increase, than that means that the individual had experienced muscle growth. I will then compare the before and after data of each individual as well as the...
