Movie Assignment
In the film “Fracture”, the character Ted Crawford played by the actor Anthony Hopkins displayed symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, according to the criteria of the DSM-IV-TR.
Throughout the movie, Ted Crawford displays signs of narcissism that meet the criteria requirements. A narcissist in a general sense displays characteristics of grandiosity, a need for admiration and a lack of empathy. Ted Crawford’s sense of grandiosity is quite blatant from start to finish. In the beginning of the movie, he is set for trial and asked for a plea. This is where he first meets Willy Beecham, the prosecuting lawyer. In the initial scene, he makes eye contact with Beecham and makes a motion to adjust his tie which delivers a sense of importance. Also throughout the movie, he asks to refer to everyone by their first name. This gives out the message that he is above courtesy and etiquette. Once the investigation starts, he takes the court trial as a joke because he knows that he is hiding the fact about the investigator having relations with his wife. After a time in court of which he is seen drawing and a disregard for anything going on in the court, he displays his information and court is adjourned. He had known that if he had done that pre-court, it would have been over with, but wanted to create the public show that the lawyer was overpowered.
His need for admiration is only seen through the character of Beecham. He continuously feels like he needs to let Beecham know his strategy and how it wasn’t just brilliant, but it was beautiful. He goes on to add that the best part about it all was that the only piece of evidence worth trying was attached to the investigators hip in the same courtroom. He admired his work and let Beecham know every moment he could.
