Approach of the Assignment

Human resource management has been identified as the key component to organizational success; without people the structure, practices and activities of organizational activities cannot be carried. Using Amelia King as a case study; the report aims to critically examine the HRM styles and management adopted.

The report will provide an appraisal of the actual HRM policies and activities implemented by Amelia King. In addition, the report will also critically discuss on the specific human resource management model adopted by Amelia King.

Finally, all discussions will be supported with literatures/theories and examples; conclusions will be reached and recommendations will be made on how attempts could be made to improve the corporate goals (in terms of HRM) of Amelia King.

1.00 Introduction

Due to the global financial meltdown; the UK estate agencies have suffered tremendous shortfalls in terms of property sales (Times online, 2008). Consequently, first time buyers are feeling the pinch; as deposits on properties have increased from 5% to 25%. This event has oppressed the housing industry; as 30% of the country’s estate agencies are folding up. Therefore, in order to save costs; managers are merging major operations; that would have otherwise operated individually. In other words, ‘Lettings’, ‘Mortgages’ and ‘Sales’ offices are being merged into one single unit. As a result, estate agents (i.e. employees/staffs) are having their salary slashed and some cases estate agents are being made redundant. The security of jobs in this industry could be seen to be unstable.

Internally (i.e. within the single office) staff are being requested to multi-task. This has put stress on staff activities and attitude to work. Nevertheless, at Amelia King our approach to staff management is different.
