Donate Blood

Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to donate blood.

Central Idea: By becoming a blood donor, one can help save lives and replenish America’s blood supply.

Introduction

I. Imagine you are going in a car. Another car zooms by and loses control. You try to stop your car but are unable to and crash into the other car. You are hurt badly and taken to hospital. You have lost lot of blood and need blood transfusion. What will happen if the hospital did not have enough supply?

II. Thanks to the donors, you will get the blood you need. Your life will be saved. At Americasblood.org you will find many such real stories of people whose lives were saved because of the blood donors. I donate blood and am proud that I can help save lives.

III. From the audience analysis, I know that some of you donate blood. But today I would like persuade all of you to donate blood and give the gift of life. I will talk about the problems associated with the shortage of blood, major causes for the need of blood and how you can help.

(Transition: Let us begin with why there is shortage of blood.)

Body

I. The scarcity of blood is a serious national problem.

A. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood. More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. One out of every ten people admitted in a hospital needs blood.

B. Less than 38 percent of the American population can donate blood and out of them only about 8 percent do donate. That is about three people out of 100.

C. According to Mayo Clinic’s Patient and Visitor Guide “Only 5 percent of eligible donors across the nation donate blood, but the number of transfusions nationwide increases by 9 percent every year.”

D. Supply during the time of holidays and summer is low because people travel.

E. There is an increase in the demand of blood but not supply and therefore it is difficult to meet the demand.
