Life Values

“Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values” (Rand). Whether people are deliberately aware of their values or not, every person has an essential set of personal ethics. Values can vary from the normal, such as the belief in hard work and punctuality, to the more in-depth, such as self-reliance, concern for others, and harmony of purpose. Examining the lives of famous people, we often see how personal values guided them, driving them to the top of their fields (Posner). The three values that have shaped my life are family, happiness, and dedication. Typically, a person’s standards are structured upon their parents.

Similarly, family is the core value from which my life principles are grounded. Family is important to me because when I need someone, the most, I can always turn to them. My family came together and intervened for me at a devastating time in my life, to support me through life’s hardships. The hardest thing for me was dealing with drugs and alcohol. At this low point in my life, I had lost everything and thought no one would ever accept me again. I went months not knowing the outcome of my actions which caused anxiety and depression. However, through my family’s dedication to me, we were able to rebuild our relationship. A character, from the dialog book, who relates to the value of family is Kindred, in Everyman, who says, “In wealth and woe we will with you hold, for over his kin a man may be bold” (Anonymous 25). This quote means that no matter what material things you may have, family is the most important of them all. In addition, this quote means that if someone holds honest, respectful, and loyal principles, they are bold.
