iPremier Case Study

The iPremier I.T. team, as well as the management team, did not perform very well during the 75 minute attack on iPremier’s I.T. environment. The team’s reaction to this cosmology episode, where everything seems strange, was typical of an unprepared organization. The cosmological episode makes a person feel like they have never been in a situation before, and they have no idea of where they are, and they have no idea who can help them. An inevitable state of panic ensues, and the individual becomes more and more anxious until he finds it almost impossible to make sense of what is happening to him. (Coutu, p.88) This is exactly how the I.T. team performed. The team spent more time talking on the phone then doing anything and I think it was because of a lack of experience and preparedness for this type of disaster. People who really get in trouble during cosmology episodes are those who try to think everything through before taking any action. The problem with defining and refining your hypotheses without testing them is, that the world keeps changing, and your analyses get further and further behind. So you've got to constantly update your thinking while you're sitting there and reflecting. Action, tempered by reflection, is the critical component in recovering from cosmology episodes. Once you start to act, you can flesh out your interpretations and rework them. But it's the action itself that gets you moving again. That's why the advice of experts is to leap in order to look, or to leap while looking. (Coutu, p.88) The only person doing anything of substance was Joanne and even she took 75 minutes to get in front of the servers. The constant exchanging of phone calls between the upper management team was detrimental to the process. Yes, the team should be aware of the issue, but Turley should be focused on the crisis and not on worrying about what the investors will think.
