Chapter 5: Dyadic Relations, Attributions, and Followership

Dyadic Relations:

The chapter discusses the relationships between the leader and its subordinates and how these relationships differ with different subordinates. First it describes the leader member exchange theory to explain how the leader should interact with its differing subordinates in order to build the team spirit and get the work done. In order for the leader to build the favorable exchange relationship it is important for the subordinate to get the feeling that he/she is viewed as competent, reliable and skilled as a leader. This favorable exchange relationship also implies the leadership effectiveness. Level of satisfaction, commitment and performance of a subordinate is a metric of the exchange relationship. Higher the satisfaction and performance of the subordinate more favorable is the exchange relationship. But in this case leader should be careful, otherwise too much differentiation can be misunderstood by other subordinates and create unfavorable exchange relationship.

Attributions:

Further the chapter explores the attribution theory, which describes the cognitive processes used by leaders to determine the reasons for the effective and ineffective performance and the appropriate reaction by the leader. The leader in such a situation may base on some bias perception of one’s ability and motivation. For the leaders it is also difficult to make the corrections to the defective performance of its subordinates that people tend to be sensitive or defensive to criticism. In this regard, the corrective feedback should be given in a way to preserve the favorable exchange relationship with subordinates, in other words, leader should be supportive rather than hostile and should encourage the subordinate for positive outcomes in his...
