Bluetooth Technology

This semester I chose to do my presentations on four topics that were generally unrelated. The first is Bluetooth Technology. I first became interested in this subject area when I first learned of it in the early 2000s and decided this would be a great opportunity to expand my knowledge on the subject area. The second was SATA Technology. The same selection process was applied here. For the last two presentations, Romance in the Information Age and Email is for Old People, I decided on those two because I felt like they would be of greater interest to the class versus a typical topic on technology.

Bluetooth is an open wireless protocol that is used to exchange data within a relatively short range at a low cost and using low power. It is a universal radio interface in the 2.4GHz frequency band which gives a 10 to 100 meter range. The Bluetooth specification describes how various communication devices such as mobile phones, computers, personal digital assistants, and even wireless headsets can easily interconnect with each other on a short-range wireless connection.

The Bluetooth name comes from 10th Century Harald Blåtand (Bluetooth) Gormson of Denmark. He was the son of King Gorm the Old and Thyra Dannebod. He was the King of Denmark between 940 and 985 AD. Harald conquered Denmark and Norway at the height of his powers in 960. By the time he was killed in a battle in 985, Harald had completed the country’s unification begun by his father, converting the Danes to Christianity. The same way Harald Bluetooth united Denmark and Norway, Bluetooth of today unites computers and telecom as well. The idea of unification was carried over to the development of the Bluetooth logo. It is a combination of two letters in the German alphabet – Hagall (H) and Berkanan (B).
