Abraham Maslow (Hierarchy of needs)

Definition:

Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) is best known for his motivational theory, the hierarchy of need, which he developed in 1943 (Satterlee, 2009). The hierarchy of needs explains the human being’s and the foundation of motivation (Salceanu & Trifu, 2010).

Summary:

The article I chose is titled “Brief economic approach of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs”. It was written by Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. Constantin Salceanu and Assoc. Prof. Ph.D. Alexandru Trifu, who both professors at the University of Iasi. We should value their opinion because as professors they have the knowledge and dedication to arrive at a relevant conclusion. The article points out the distinction between motivation and meta-motivation. Motivation represents the connection between satisfying manifested needs and achieving the goals or tasks assigned to an individual, whereas meta-motivation represents the self-motivation of the individual (Salceanu & Trifu, 2010). Additionally the five levels of hierarchy are explained and divided in “D-needs” which stand for “Deficiency needs” and “B-needs” which represent “Being needs”.

Discussion:

The article “Brief economic approach of Abraham Maslow’s hierarch of needs”, informs about detailed information related to Maslow’s motivational theory. To explain the hierarchy, the needs can be categorized into “Deficiency needs” which include the physiological, safety and social acceptance needs, and “Being needs” which include Esteem and self-actualization needs (Salceanu & Trifu, 2010).

I was fascinated by his pyramid because I find it quite interesting that human needs that motivate an individual to find happiness can be summarized with Maslow’s concept. Some people might disagree and some people might have the urge...
