I. INTRODUCTION

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was the preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British ruled India. Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights and freedom across the world. He is considered the father of the nation and is perhaps the most widely respected leader of the 20th century.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly also known as Babasaheb, was an Indian jurist, political leader, philosopher, anthropologist, historian, orator, economist, and editor. He was also the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of Indian Constitution. Born into a poor Mahar (considered an Untouchablecaste) family, Ambedkar spent his whole life fighting against social discrimination, the system of Chaturvarna – the categorization of Hindu society into four varnas – and the Hindu caste system. Today he is considered to be an icon of the oppressed classes; his ideas and view are still a driving force in the lower caste communities.

Though both these leaders had very similar goals, that of the development and upliftment of the country. They approached these goals very differently. Their ideas and views are an important means through which we can understand the time period of newly independent India. Thus in this paper I will look at some of their diverging opinions and will try to analyse their impact on our society.

II. UNTOUCHABILITY

There have been tremendous efforts on the part of social reformers and religious leaders to improve the lot of the Dalits. However, it should be noted that although most of the social reformers like...
