In order for a company to become successful, and stay successful, they must implement a strong management team consisting of strategic leaders that can lead the company in a positive direction. A strategic leader successfully develops a vision for the firm, designs strategic actions to achieve this vision, and empowers others to carry out those strategic actions. Within most companies, it is hard to find one leader – most have a team of people who can make the company prosper.

In the case of Google Inc., there are 3 leaders who can be considered strategic leaders: Larry Page the CEO and co-founder, Eric Schmidt the Executive Chairman, and Sergey Brin the co-founder and a director of special projects (“Google Company”). They have exhibited all of the characteristics of a strategic leader to bring their company to the success it sees today. The following Appendix A outlines the characteristics of a strategic leader:

1. Establishing the vision and mission. | 4. Building an entrepreneurial culture. |

2. Developing the top management team and succession. | 5. Promoting integrity and ethical behavior. |

3. Managing the resource portfolio. | 6. Using effective controls. |

Google Inc. has a very clear mission, which is “organize the world‘s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Their vision is not so clearly outlined but can be concluded through a quote by Page; Google will strive to be “the perfect search engine [that] would understand exactly what you mean and give back exactly what you want.” (“Google Company”)

The development of a top management team and succession has been transpiring since the founding. As I mentioned earlier, each leader has a separate position within the company as well as 3 more chief officers in the management team to create the top management and any succession that would be needed.
