Entering the Brazilian Market

History: Evidence shows that Brazil was initially inhabited by farmers, fishers, hunters and gatherers dating back to at least 9000 BC. European contact was first made in 1500 by the Portuguese who gave the country its name due to the large quantities of brazil wood they found which was originally used for the extraction of red dye. A lot of interest grew in this land and soon attracted many more settlers. The Portuguese settlers first began to develop a form of government in 1533. Territorial expansions soon took place despite having to ward off invasions from the French and the Dutch which proved unsuccessful.

It eventually come to the point that the Brazilians no longer wanted to yield to the Portuguese homeland government and declared independence from Portugal in 1822. The Brazilian War of Independence soon followed and after several years of war Brazil was able to withstand and gained their independence in 1825. In the subsequent years to come Brazil was faced with great turmoil and government instability which is typical for a newly developing nation. Coffee became Brazil’s most important product and as a result the coffee plantation owners had gained all the power and began to run the country creating more instability and trying times for many years to follow. For a majority of the 1900’s Brazil dealt with a devastating economy, political instability, and a civil war. It wasn’t until 1985 Brazil was finally able to make the transition back to a full democracy. Although there where some issues at first as one president did not fare so well as the economy was in such a crisis and the leader to follow was caught up in a scandal and was impeached. However immediately following Brazilian leaders proved quite successful as they brought stability to the economy and served for many years granting Brazil with a much needed solid political structure that still exists to this day.
