CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background study

Pharmaceutical inventory management in most developing countries face difficulties daily such as lack of access to quality drugs, economically inefficient procurement of drugs, lack of planning and organisation of drugs and medical supplies in hospitals and other related problems. With the human population increasing rapidly in these areas, diseases, accidents, natural disasters and other abnormalities threaten these areas. Citizens in these areas affected by these events tend to rely on cheaper and low quality drugs to solve health issues due to lack of access of quality drugs in hospitals (Kimmabo, 2011).

Up till now some pharmacies use the labour intensive system paper based system, which has resulted in drugs being left to expire, lost, inappropriately used by unfaithful employees, resulting in 40% of patients to have no access to essential medicines (Kimambo, 2011).

Taking records of goods available manually, consumes a lot of time and is error-prone. It would be helpful to build an inventory system that accepts inputs from day to day transactions of goods into the inventory database. This inventory system will improve the pharmacy’s efficiency, by keeping accurate records, and saves time by reducing time consuming tasks like time spent in writing down product information.

A Pharmacy (also called Pharmaceutics) is the branch of the health sciences deals with the preparation, dispensing, and proper utilization of drugs. It is also the health profession that links the health sciences with the chemical sciences and it is charged with ensuring safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs (Pharmacy, 2012).
