Bottlenecks in a Process
OPS/571
Abstract
This paper will review and examine the process for the data collected in Week 1. Be aware of and evaluate the key bottlenecks in the process. Use Goldratt’s theory of constraints to recognize and defeat process bottlenecks.
Bottlenecks in a Process
The process of getting up in the morning, preparing breakfast, and making sure the girls are up and ready for the drive to school and work is a routine in need of much improvement. To improve this routine there is a need to recognize and identify the bottlenecks that can help make the morning go smoother, eliminate wasted time, and improve efficiency of the entire process. Bottlenecks can be a department, facility, machine, or resource already working at its full capacity and cannot handle any additional demand placed on it (Business Dictionary, 2012).
My daily routine, which can take up to 1.5 hours, is capable of developing unpredictable events, including bad weather, accidents, sickness, and car problems. These events have the possibility to cause delays to the process. Elimination of possible bottlenecks to this process can add valuable time and keep the process running smooth and on time. With documentation and review of the time spent for the factors that may affect the process change, the use of Goldratt’s theory of constraints can assist in identifying the source of the main bottlenecks. After identifying the constraints or the weakest link, this can ensure that improvements are possible and additional resources may be needed to eliminate the constraints on the process.
Using Goldratt’s theory of constraints is used to identify any bottleneck slowing down or hindering the daily morning routine. The night before is very important to the morning process. Preparation that begins the moment I arrive home each night can reduce and eliminate possible bottlenecks each morning. Making sure that homework is completed, the car is working properly...
